Sprainbrook’s own Formulated Organic Garden Soil.

Spring is almost here and we will be opening up in early March. The two things organic gardeners are most concerned about are growing organic vegetables for their family to eat and to have a beautiful organic lawn that their children and pets can safely play on. In my book “12 “Steps to Natural Gardening” we cover in detail both of these subjects. For those who do not have my book make sure you buy it, for there is so much to cover that I need to constantly refer to it, or my emails will become 9-10 pages long. When I refer you to specific pages in my book it is important information you need to read. “12 Steps to Natural Gardening” was written as a reference book. I spent a lot of time writing, observing and testing formulas and recommendations. Customers who have followed these recommendations have reported fantastic results. Each year we learn more and I will continually pass information on to you.
Last fall I spent a great deal of time mixing hundreds of yards of organic soil that I have blended and put together for sale. This is a Sprainbrook mix that you can’t buy elsewhere. We harvested leaf mold from our over 50 year leave composting program. In our Nursery stock display beds we added leaves each year to heal in and overwinter our nursery stock plants. This procedure served a dual purpose, overwintering plants while composting leaves. Leaf mold produces a fantastic organic component that has been the basis for our rich organic soil throughout the years. It is a great organic component that my father called “black gold”. We want our customers to be able to benefit from it. We put our ford tractor to work and piled the leaf mold into the huge bins we had built over the years out back. We also had in stock a giant mountain of compost that we created over a long period of time. This rich compost was created by saving every green plant part we ever had, of green materials brought back from landscape jobs and wood chips that we ground up in our chipper. This diverse mixture has created compost that is rich in nutrients derived from a diverse mixture of plant material. The greater the mix, the greater the results. Sprainbrook owns a large shredder that we use every time we mix our soil. We run this material through the shredder mixing 1/3 leaf mold and 2/3 compost. It has turned out to be a fantastic soil filled with great nutrient and carbon value. Last fall I grew my Chrysanthemums and Ornamental Cabbage and Kale in this mixture. Without adding anything else I grew the most beautiful crop I ever grown. This spring it will be the main component of my organic soil mix. I will be growing all my annuals and vegetables in it. Leaf mold has many soil benefits and a large mixture of compost adds many different nutrients. We are excited to offer this product to you for sale. We are pricing it at a competitive price of $50.00 a yard picked up at the Nursery or we can arrange to have someone deliver it to you. However you will have to pay the delivery charge.
One thing we are sure of there will be no soil that will be better than this mix. This is an excellent product to add to your garden. This is something you should take advantage of while it lasts. It is perfect to use it to top dress existing beds, incorporate into new beds or to mound up in new beds. It is important to understand the fact, that if you raise your new planting bed slightly above your existing soil, you now have a raised bed. Raised beds of any sort provided, they get the proper water, will grow better plants due to increased aeration and additional organic matter. The more organic matter you can add to your soil, the better your soil will be. Any poor soil can become a good soil with the proper addition of organic amendments. Westchester soils are heavy in clay and need to be amended. As the warm weather moves in and the snow melts, take a look at your property and see where this soil mix can benefit you. If you call the Nursery after March 1we can arrange for pick up or delivery. We will also be hand packaging this soil in bags.
