If we garden organically we will be doing our part in fighting global warming. If we garden chemically we will add carbon to our air instead of removing it adding to global warming.  According to testing taking place at the Rhodale Institute, the leading authority in organic farming, that if we go back to nature’s way of growing plants and eliminate all chemical fertilizers and toxic insecticides, fungicides and herbicides we will reverse global warming. The answer to reversing Global Warming is in the soil. Soil is a living community. We need to treat it with respect and not destroy it.

These are my 12 steps to reverse global warming that every concerned citizen should try to follow. Not only farmers but every land owner can play an important role in turning global warming around. If we make everyone aware of the problem and we all do our part we can reverse the trend.

I will explain each of these steps in greater detail in my upcoming emails.  If I do a good job I will bind it into a book. This is the most important problem we need to solve in the world.

  • We are all in this together.
  • Everything from the earth should go back into the earth.
  • We should never apply chemical fertilizers to our soil.
  • Composting is an essential commitment every organic gardener needs to make.
  • Add compost and compost tea to your property.
  • Apply a large mixture of organic products into or onto your soil. The greater the mixture the greater the results.
  • Incorporate a large mixture of plant material onto your property. A large mixture of plant material will attract a large number of beneficial insects to your site.
  • Always cover bare ground.  Bare ground is prone to erosion and emitting carbon into the air.  Add organic mulches, cover crops and other plant material to cover bare soil.
  • Feed your soil with organic fertilizers. Alternate brands to get a greater mixture of organics in your soil.
  • Feed plants in late fall to stimulate root growth. Feed your plants in the spring for top growth and in the late fall for root growth.  The strength of any plant is in the development of a deep strong root system.
  • Never apply toxic herbicides, fungicides or insecticides to your soil.
  • Conserve water so that it penetrates deep into your soil instead of running off.
  • Condition compacted soils so air can be present and sandy soils so it has moisture retention abilities. Soil is home for a living environment. The food web needs to thrive.
